Geography Society and Alumni Association Activity: Boat Trip to Tung Ping Chau and Sham Chung
On October 19, our school's Geography Society, in collaboration with the Alumni Association, organized a boat excursion to Tung Ping Chau and Sham Chung. The event attracted over a hundred enthusiastic participants, including students, parents, and teachers, embarking on a journey that blended geographical learning with nature exploration.
The first stop was Tung Ping Chau, where participants ventured into the sedimentary rock zones to search for rare stromatolite fossils and experience the wonders of geological evolution firsthand. The group then continued to the vast grasslands of Sham Chung, where they observed the local ecosystem up close and appreciated the richness and diversity of nature.
During the boat journey, the group passed several notable geological landmarks, including the Tolo Channel, Ma Shi Chau, Pak Sha Chau (Tiger’s Tooth), Wong Chuk Kok Tsui — home to Hong Kong’s oldest rock formations — as well as the striking Ghost Hand and Ghost Face Rocks. Along the way, teachers provided insightful commentary on the landforms, helping students connect classroom knowledge with real-world observation and deepen their understanding of geography.
The activity aimed to foster parent-child interaction, enhance students’ awareness of the natural environment and conservation, and spark interest in learning through fieldwork. Participants shared that the experience was both educational and meaningful — enriching their geographical knowledge while strengthening the emotional bonds between parents and children.
