Report on Yau Tong Ng Kwai Shan Hiking and Outdoor Abseiling Leadership Training

The Geography Society of our school participated in the “Yau Tong Ng Kwai Shan Hiking and Outdoor Abseiling” leadership training programme organized by the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong. The activity provided students with a valuable opportunity to explore both the natural environment and the historical heritage of Hong Kong.

The programme commenced with a visit to the Devil’s Peak area, where students examined abandoned military structures and gained close access to the Gough Battery and the Pottinger Battery. This experience offered them a vivid impression of past military life and enriched their understanding of Hong Kong’s historical development. Following the exploration of these military sites, the group proceeded to the Lei Yue Mun Quarry. Along the way, students were introduced to practical geographic skills such as map reading and compass navigation, thereby integrating geographical and ecological knowledge into real-life contexts.

Upon arrival at the quarry, students engaged in outdoor abseiling under the guidance of professional instructors. With courage and determination, they took on the challenge, which significantly enhanced their self-confidence. The activity also fostered a strong sense of teamwork, as students encouraged and supported one another throughout the descent.

Overall, the training programme was both educational and inspiring. It not only deepened students’ appreciation of Hong Kong’s history and geography but also strengthened their leadership qualities, resilience, and collaborative spirit.
